Overview: Zabrek (zah-breck), as far as this name for the kingdom goes, is a fairly new presence on the face of Faylia. Formed by its citizenry in coalition with monks following the deity Marod after the initial orc and goblin invasions over two centuries ago, it has arguably recovered better than any of the other kingdoms ravaged by war at the time. Its citizens live in a society governed by a strict code of laws, although most of the authority figures are not unsympathetic to the ailments and needs of the common folk. Abbott Philius is getting older and rules the kingdom from the main monastery of Marod in Uren’dar, where he regularly entertains envoys from all over Faylia, particularly Marae and Tyr.
Zabrek shares an arbitrary border with Tyr on the west and Marae by way of the Laori River on the east, with its southern border defined by the sea of Enet. Its northern borders are defined by the Svernthrae Mountains towards the west and by the encroachment of the goblin kingdom of Irlghik towards the east. The city of Uren’dar is clean, but still mostly a collection of hovels and ramshackle houses that have been built around the great monastery to Marod. The monastery itself is massive, and quite possibly the strongest stand-alone fortress in Faylia. Much of the trade and old nobility still reside in the former capital, Arien, which has recovered well since being sacked by the orcs.
Zabrek’s military is large and well organized, but is comprised mostly of peasants and laborers. As a result it is a general but underlying fear in the country that any sustained warfare, either from Irlghik or Tyr, would result in another collapse of the country. Despite this, the soldiers themselves stay in line and many are led my martial artists from the monasteries and temples of Marod.
